The skyrocketing violence in Central America calls upon scholars to examine the needed conditions for peace. This article challenges assumption that absence of among factions conflict is chief goal around which peacemaking efforts should operate. Based on ethnographic research with women relatives male gang members and civil war veterans El Salvador, I argue 1992 Salvadoran Peace Accords ended twelve years developed a male-centered notion negative peace armed while naturalizing racialized state as part security measures ongoing against low-grade everyday life.
